Sweep: The Most Intelligent Game You’ve Never Heard About(Until Now)

Listen up! You might think you’re pretty sharp because you can solve Wordle in two tries, recite your ex’s Netflix password from memory, or hold a philosophical debate about which Hogwarts house fits your vibe, But have you played Sweep? Because if not, I hate to break it to you—you’re missing out on the most intellectually superior card game known to humankind (or at least to that one uncle who never loses).

What Is it and Why Should You Care?

Sweep is an ancient yet criminally underrated card game that has been sharpening minds for generations. The rules? Simple enough to learn but diabolically tricky to master. Think of it as the lovechild of chess and poker, but with more passive-aggressive stares across the table.

Here’s the gist: You and your opponent(s) take turns playing cards to capture others, aiming to “sweep” the table clean in glorious, ego-boosting fashion. Strategy is everything, blink twice, and Grandma will have snatched your high cards before you even realize what’s happening.

How to Play Sweep

Sweep

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Shuffle well and deal four cards to the first player after the dealer.
  3. This player chooses a number from the four cards to create a set. A set can only be made from 9, 10, 11 (Jack), 12 (Queen), or 13 (King).
  4. If the player doesn’t receive any of these numbers, the cards are re-dealt until they do.
  5. Once the number is chosen, all four players receive four cards each, and four cards are placed face-up on the table.
  6. The player who called the number must now build a valid set using cards from their hand and the table.

Example: If the chosen number is 11, and the table has 9, 3, 7, and 12, the player can:

  • Add 2 to the 9 to make 11
  • Put 8 to the 3 to make 11
  • Add 1 to the 3 and 7 on the table to make 11

If the player cannot make a set, they must throw their chosen card to the table, and the turn moves to the next player.

Once the set is made, all the remaining cards are distributed among players, and the game begins.

Gameplay:

  1. Players take turns playing one card from their hand.
  2. if the player plays a card that matches a card on the table (same rank), they capture it.
  3. If the played card sums up to two or more cards on the table, they capture all those cards.
  4. When the player cannot match or sum up(to9,10,11,12,13), they may place their card on the table for future use.
  5. Players can only create a set of 9, 10, 11, 12, or 13 if they have the required card in their hand or if their teammate does (which they’ll know when the teammate makes a set).
  6. The game continues until all cards are played, after which points are counted.
  7. Special Rule: If there is a single set(for eg 11) on the table (not part of a set), a player may add a 1 or a 2 to make it a set of 12 or 13. However, if there are two 11s or two separate sets summing to 11 on the table, this rule does not apply, and the set cannot be altered.

Points System:

  • Each Spade = Points equal to the number on the card (e.g., Jack of Spades = 11 points)
  • 10 of Diamonds = 6 points
  • Each Ace = 1 point each
  • A Sweep = 50 points

Sweeps:

  • A Sweep occurs when a player clears all cards from the table in a single move.
  • The capturing player marks this by keeping one card face-down in their pile.

Winning the Game:

The team with the highest score at that moment wins the game!

At the end of each round, teams total their points.

The game continues until the cumulative difference in points between teams reaches 100.
